The results of nose surgery are more natural than ever, thanks to greatly improved surgical technique and anesthesia over the last two decades. Nose surgery can improve the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhance facial harmony and correct breathing difficulties caused by structural irregularities.
Breathing problems should be discussed in the initial consultation to determine whether work on the nasal septum or other internal structures should be performed at the same time as the refinement procedure.
The evaluation may include CAT scans of the nasal septum and nasal sinuses to assess chronic allergies, sinusitis, nosebleeds, and other conditions. If surgery will be covered by health insurance, these studies will be mandatory.
Computer imaging is very useful in any case, helping you to better informed and more realistic about expectations for the surgery. The shape of your nose is usually the result of heredity, although it may have been altered by an injury. Surgery can change your nose in these ways:
How it's done: Incisions hidden at the nostril base and/or inside the nose allow access to reshape underlying cartilage and/or bone. This may include lowering humps, narrowing of nasal bones, shaping of the nasal tip or nostril size and improving the angle between the nose and the upper lip. The nose will usually be splinted for five days and may be packed for several days if internal work is done.
Results: Initial results begin to be visible when the splint is removed. Black eyes, a result of bruising, usually clear up at about the same time. The patient can return to an active lifestyle in about a week, although swelling and bruising make take 2-4 weeks to subside, and protecting the nose from the sun is important for about eight weeks. Final results may be apparent 8-10 weeks. Incision lines will continue to refine and fade for 1 year.
